b) Le dopage d’une cellul= e PV au silicium

 

En quittant la bande de valence, l’électr= on laisse un " trou " qui va se comporter comme une charge positive,= et qui va se recombiner avec le premier électron qu’il rencontrer= a. Il suffit donc de créer un champ électrique qui sépare= les électrons des trous afin d’éviter qu’ils se recombinent, ce qui a également pour effet de créer un courant électrique.

 

L’un des moyens le plus employés généralement est de créer une jonction " P-N &quo= t;, obtenue en " dopant " le semi-conducteur, c’est à di= re en y introduisant de faibles quantités d’un autre matér= iau appelé impureté :

¨       si les atomes d’un matériau tel= que le phosphore contiennent plus d’électrons que le matéri= au semi-conducteur avec lequel il sera mélangé et qu’il dopera, le semi-conducteur dopé contiendra des électrons libr= es en excès : il sera dit de type " N ". Le dopage " N " consiste donc par exemple à ajouter au semi-conducteur des at= omes possédant 5 électrons périphériques (phosphore = par exemple). Quatre de ces électrons vont participer à la struct= ure et un électron supplémentaire va se retrouver libre et pouvoi= r se déplacer. Ce sont des porteurs de charges mobiles. Ce dopage se fait= sur la face avant exposée à la lumière,

¨       si, au contraire, les atomes d’impureté - bore par exemple - contiennent moins d’électrons que le matériau semi-conducteur avec lequel= il sera mélangé et qu’il dopera (comme le bore), le semi-conducteur dopé sera déficitaire en électrons : il sera dit de type " P ". Le dopage " P " consiste donc p= ar exemple à ajouter au silicium des atomes possédant 3 électrons de valence (bore par exemple). Ceux-ci participent à= ; la structure, mais un " trou " est créé par chaque ato= me étranger puisqu’il lui manque un électron périphérique. Ce dopage se fait sur la face arrière du semi-conducteur.

 

En " liant " solidairement un cristal N et un cristal P, on crée une jonction P-N, au sein de laquelle il est poss= ible de faire apparaître un champ électrique interne pour entraîner vers le circuit extérieur les charges électri= ques libérées sous illumination. Ainsi, sous l’action du cho= c du photon, l’électron en excès sur l’atome d’impureté N est arraché, créant un " trou électronique " (cf. Schéma 2).

 

 

 

 

L’électron arraché est capté naturellement par l’atome d’impureté P qui est déficitaire en électrons, créant ainsi une " bosse électronique ". La liaison est alors devenue instable él= ectroniquement et aura tendance à revenir à son état d’équilibre électronique initial - le " trou " précédemment créé sera comblé par un électron et ainsi de suite, créant donc une circulation d’électrons, et donc un courant électrique.
